The MathCounts competition is held on a Saturday in February at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown (UPJ). Approximately 100 students from 12 schools compete in this annual event, organized by the Johnstown Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers. MathCounts is a national program designed to improve math skills among US students. The program focuses on middle school students, who are at a crucial stage in developing and sustaining math interest and ability.
Students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade may participate. Interested students should have a strong math background and be able about to answer questions quickly and accurately. Students will take the School Competition test in January to determine team participants. One individual and four team members usually make up the Windber Middle School team. Chosen participants practice during E & I (Enrichment and Intervention) with the other team members to become familiar with the competition format.
