MTSS - Multi-Tiered System of Supports » Trauma

Trauma

At the Windber Area School District, we understand the significant impact that trauma can have on students' lives and their ability to thrive academically, emotionally, and socially. We are committed to providing a supportive and nurturing environment for all our students, which is why we have implemented a comprehensive approach to address student trauma.

Our approach to student trauma is rooted in evidence-based programming and is an integral part of our Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework. Through this framework, we aim to meet the diverse needs of our students and create a school culture that promotes resilience, healing, and success.

As part of our commitment to addressing student trauma, we have incorporated the following evidence-based programs into our MTSS framework with funding through Somerset Single County Authority for Drug and Alcohol:

  1. Bounce Back: Bounce Back is a proven program that focuses on building resilience and promoting mental well-being among students who have experienced trauma. This program equips students with the necessary skills to cope with adversity, manage stress, and develop positive relationships. Through structured lessons and engaging activities, Bounce Back fosters emotional growth and provides a safe space for students to express themselves.

  2. CBITS (Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools): CBITS is an evidence-based program designed to support students who have experienced traumatic events. It combines cognitive-behavioral techniques with a supportive, school-based approach to help students process their experiences and develop effective coping strategies. CBITS empowers students to overcome the challenges associated with trauma, reduce symptoms of distress, and enhance their overall well-being.

  3. Blues Program: The Blues Program is a specialized intervention aimed at supporting students who struggle with depressive symptoms resulting from trauma. Through a combination of group therapy, individual counseling, and skill-building activities, the program helps students understand and manage their emotions. The Blues Program fosters a sense of belonging, encourages positive self-expression, and promotes overall mental wellness among our students.

By integrating these evidence-based programs into our MTSS framework, we ensure that students receive the targeted support they need to navigate the effects of trauma successfully. Our dedicated and highly trained staff work collaboratively with students, families, and community partners to implement these programs effectively.

At Windber Area School District, we recognize that addressing student trauma is a collective effort. We strive to create a trauma-informed learning community where educators are equipped with the knowledge and resources to support students effectively. We provide ongoing professional development opportunities for our staff, enabling them to stay up to date with the latest research and best practices in trauma-informed care.

We are proud to offer these evidence-based programs as part of our commitment to nurturing the whole child and fostering an inclusive and supportive educational environment. Through our MTSS framework and the implementation of Bounce Back, CBITS, and the Blues Program, we are dedicated to helping our students heal, grow, and succeed academically and personally.
