Please know that we are taking direction from the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) and their directives may frequently change due to the fluidity of the crisis. Additionally, almost all of the employees will be working remotely. As a district, our staff has been working to develop educational opportunities and systems that support the social, emotional, physical, and educational needs of all students, while acknowledging and addressing the personal challenges that you may be facing in your personal and professional lives.
We are planning remote instruction and developing a Continuity of Education Plan. Mr. Glenn Gaye, Director of Education, will formulate this plan along with building principals and supervisors. This plan will be disseminated to the teaching staff and they will then be in contact with their students. Initially, all students should receive a phone call from one of their teachers with information and instructions for moving forward with their online assignments.
The District is prepared to execute our Continuity of Education Plan (CEP) for our students, teachers, and families beginning on March 30, 2020, continuing until the time it is deemed safe for our students and staff to return to our schools. As educators, we are aware of the many challenges ahead as we implement an approach to learning that is new for many teachers, students, and families. Therefore, I encourage ALL of us to practice patience and work together to educate our students. I am confident that our Windber Pride will be the reason we successfully rise to meet these new challenges!
We understand that the remote learning experience will not replace the importance of actual classroom instruction. However, we will use our available resources as best as we can. If needed, there will be wi-fi access provided in the High School/Middle School parking lot. In order to maintain social distancing, we ask that students remain in your vehicle while accessing the wireless network. The wireless network name is WASD-Public and the password is WindberPublic2020.
All WASD online material can be accessed from any device. If you are in need of a device, you may borrow a Chromebook from the school during this time. We will have Chromebook pickup times starting Tuesday March 31st – Friday April 3rd 9:00am - 11:00am in the High School/Middle School parking lot. Please complete the Student Technology Form that was sent out via our Alert System. If you are unable to complete or did not receive the Technology Survey that was sent out by our Alert System, please contact 814-467-4567 extension 301 between 9:00am - 11:00am on Tuesday March 31st – Friday April 3rd. If you are in need of a device, a completed Electronic Equipment Usage Policy (sent along with this letter) will need to be turned in at time of pickup. WASD Staff will fill in the serial number and model number.
Additionally, the Department of Education has announced the cancellation of the PSSA and Keystone exams that are administered in select grades across the Commonwealth. They also are cancelling standardized testing for students in career and technical education programs. These exams include National Occupational Competency Testing Institute (NOCTI) and National Institute of Metalworking Skills (NIMS).
The Continuing of Education Plan (CEP) will be listed on the district’s website in the very near future after receiving final approval from the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Please continue to access our website for this document, as well as other resources and updates.
