Student Representative to the Windber Area Board of Education
The Windber Area School District is excited to offer high school students the unique opportunity to serve as a Student Representative on the Board of Directors. This position allows a student to engage directly in school governance, providing valuable input on decisions that impact the district. The Student Representative will represent the voice of their peers while gaining firsthand experience in leadership and policy development.
Requirements & Expectations
The Student Representative will be expected to:
- Attend all regularly scheduled Board meetings as determined in the December reorganization meeting.
- Stay informed on policies pending before the Board and consult with peers and Board staff about important issues.
- Follow the Board's rules and protocols for the conduct of its business.
- Offer a monthly report on behalf of students during Board meetings.
- Obtain parental or guardian consent to participate in Board meetings and activities.
Selection Process
- Any student in grade 12 is eligible to run for the position.
- The Student Representative will be chosen through a popular vote by all high school students.
- Academic performance (grades and GPA) will not be a factor in the selection process.
- A Student Representative may be removed by a majority vote of the Board.
Term
The Student Representative will serve a one-year term, beginning on July 1 and ending on June 30. Students may serve multiple terms if eligible, and the role may later extend to students in grades 10 or 11.
Resources & Support
- The Student Representative will receive excused absences for any Board-related functions that occur during the school day.
- They will also participate in meetings with district and school leadership and have access to the same resources as other Board members.
Board Norms
- The Student Representative will sit with other Board members at the dais during public meetings.
- Attendance at all public Board meetings is required unless illness or a conflict prevents participation.
- The Student Representative will not attend executive or closed sessions.
- They will be featured on the school district website, alongside other Board members.
Rights of the Student Representative
- The Student Representative will be able to participate in discussions at Board meetings and propose agenda items or topics for work sessions to the Superintendent.
- Regular meetings with the Superintendent, as part of the Student Advisory Council, will be part of their duties.
Training & Transition
The Student Representative will receive formal training before starting their role, equivalent to the training provided to other Board members.
Non-Voting Role
Please note that the Student Representative will serve in a Non-Voting capacity, meaning they will not cast formal votes on agenda items or Board decisions.
